tripod Q

So I have this tripod...
http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-Modo.../dp/B000FA7PQ2

Thought it was gonna be nice since it's a Manfrotto but it's more like it's only for P&S cameras (of course I didn't look at the weight restrictions). I took off my BG-E2 and the thing still won't hold my 40d and 17-35mm 2.8L up properly.

Anyway, I wanted to get something like this..

So my question is do I need to buy a new base or can I use this one I already have and just swap heads?

Hmmm...good question. Here's my take on it: the head obviously couldn't support much weight so it would break if it's too heavy. However, simply replacing a head would make make it too heavy on the legs thus making it unstable as well. So I would think that you'll need a new tripod. Manfrotto makes a few solid tripods that are selling for about $120 + about $40-50 for a good head.

It doesn't look like the column on that tripod is compatible with the various heads rated for DSLRs. Manfrotto's website indicates "built in head", so I don't know that you could remove it. I think you might have to invest in a new tripod.

The Manfrotto head you show there isn't too bad, but it is pretty big and heavy. I've got the 488RC2 ballhead on my Bogen tripod, and it weighs nearly 1 lb. but is more compact that the 322RC2. My one complaint about the 488RC2 head is the lack of a spirit level.

hmmm thanks guys. It sux cuz I like the actual tripod and its sturdy enough to hold the weight, plus it looks like it comes apart, just probably won't fit is all.

I'd like to get that head for $120 but I don't want to drop $250 total I don't have right now on a new tripod base... it'd be hard enough to upgrade to the head as it is.
