Don't fret too much. Unless you can't live without the better ISO performance and high shutter burst rate, your 50D will produce stunning images.

I shoot birds at dawn and dust and find high ISO performance very important to the quality of my images. My 5D2 is better than the 7D in this regard, but the crop sensor of the 7D will give my lenses 60% more reach. It came down to comparing camera body prices to lens prices, where the 7D came out much, much cheaper.

What do the 7D costs in US now? Just wondering if it's much cheaper than here in Norway.

Just curious, what factors were important to you in that decision? I think the 5D2 and 7D bodies are as large as I want, so I bought them, so long as they had the features that I need. I'm not dissing your decision, just genuinely interested.

I'll be using the 7D for macro and telephoto beyond 200mm and the 5D2 for everything else. If I hadn't gotten pretty deep into wild bird photography (several hundred images per month), I wouldn't be getting the 7D, but a body is way cheaper than tele lenses beyond 400mm f5.6.

Okay, that's cheaper alright. Here the body is 13400 NOK (approx 2300$).

Very nice ssabripo. You have a beautiful family and live in a very nice area. Is that Huntington?

I need to try some videos with my 7D or 5D2. I mainly do wildlife stills. Here are two from last the weekend with the 7D:

Canada goose takes off into sunrise

White tail deer buck looks me over

Here's one with the 5D2:

Predawn clouds over Colorado

Best regards,

Dave

Have you tried the Wireless flash control with your flash, if you've got one that is.

There's a convenient function for toggling through the various AF patterns. You hit the button on the far right of the camera back and then there's a button just to the left of the shutter release to toggle the AF modes. You don't even need to look after a little practice.

For birds in flight and wildlife, I still almost always use the single-point spot. Even with the expanded spot there's too much risk that you'll catch some blue sky or a bit of brush and throw the focus off. For that stuff, precision is the way to go for AF.
