Canon Rebel XT - good deal or not?
Hey guys,
I've been wanting to get a DSLR for quite some time now and have finally decided to make the transition. Just sold my point-and-shoot camera and have lined up a deal a used Canon Rebel XT. I know this camera is very* old and many models new models have entered the market since it's introduction but I just needed some opinions regarding the camera. How good is it? Any personal experiences? I'm picky when it comes to pictures, however I don't want to splurge on my first DSLR until I'm more experienced. It'll be coming with the kit lens, the standard 18-55mm - all this for $325 CAD A friend of mine has a Nikon D80 and I was blown away with his pictures, however I'm partial to Canon colors, and that camera is not in my budget. Lemme know what you guys think. |

What is your budget?
I wouldnt get the XTi actually.. With the T1i out, the Xsi has dropped its price significantly, I'd try to find an Xsi for that price, which is possibly doable.. try craigslist/ebay.

If you are talking about the original XT, the 350D, I wouldn't get. The oldest I'd get is the 400D, the XTi. Bigger screen, and much better auto-focus system.
With price drops on the XSi, you may want to save up a little longer and get that one. It has the DIGIC III, and live-view which is nice to have. Also, between each one, the ISO (for low light shooting) was much improved. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/comp...s450d&show=all

Yes, but...
I got one and am learning on it, so its good for that. Im up over 12 thousand shots so i think ive got my money out of it. Im also building my lens arsenal for the next body. Just got a 10-22 so i think its a 50D but need to improve the skills...I would feel bad for the sensor of an expensive body with all the pictures i take just trying to figure this stuff out. The auto focus does get confused at times which is annoying.

You should try craigslist to meet up with people or even Fred Miranda to find some deals. Like some have said before, you will definitely outgrow it fast. You can find used ones for pretty cheap and you don't really have to worry about the actuations on the shutter, they are rated for at least 100k-150k for the consumer-level cameras. The only thing it will really hurt would just be resale value. Though, you should try to find one that has been sent in to Canon more recently for cleaning or something if you get one with a lot of shutter clicks.
Of course, it all depends on your budget though. I live on FM (Fred Miranda) and Craigslist and it should be relatively easy to find a Rebel XSi with the kit lens between 400-450 USD.

XS or XSi at least... should last you a few years for a good price, newer technology and only a small upgrade fee from what you'd pay for a 4-5 yr old camera anyway.
