5D mkII video from the Aquarium

I'm sure this is amateur hour for the pro video guys, but I still can't get over the quality of video this camera produces considering I bought it for stills.

Great Vid - it should be good tho - the camera body alone is £2000 in England.

True, but the camera is worth the price without the video capabilities. Video is a great bonus.

I have a Canon Sx1 which has 1080p etc but I'm pretty sure my Video (if I did shoot in an aquarium) would be nowhere near as good as that.

I've got to get the 5D mkII some day too.

Looks great!

Obviously it will never replace a high end video camera, but I'll bet its just as good as the little handicam I have. Far better lens than you can get on a handicam.

What holds back the DSLR's is the inability to have a deep DoF and low light performance at the same time. However, I'd say the trade-off is worth it if I don't need to lug another camera around with me!

The 5d can have a wider DoF in low light if you bump up the ISO. I was shooting at iso800 the whole time. I just wasn't sure how bad the noise would get with video at a higher iso. I need to test that sometime.

That video is stunning Mark. Seeing the potential of my 5DMkII for video I now HAVE TO get out and use that function. With the right subjects (that don't require zooming) the results are incredible. I see that you used a tripod. Did you get permission to clean the glass??

I'm guessing that you got very close to the glass. Did you do anything else to eliminate the reflections in the glass.

I used a monopod. I don't think they allow tripods. Probably a good thing because kids were pushing my monopod away to get closer to the fish and stepping on my feet all the time. Don't go on a weekend!

I didn't clean any glass either. I think you just don't see smudges mostly because of where I was focusing. I did have to manual focus a lot because the glass was making it tough to auto focus. The 2x/4x zoom in live view was really helpful for manual focusing. If there was really dirty glass, I just didn't bother trying to shoot through it.

Good stuff. I usually only take my monopod, so that's good to know. (I'm pleased that people don't usually freak out over the monopod, but go crazy when they see a tripod, extended or collapsed).

How close was the front of the lens to the glass?

Thanks for your feedback on how you did it.

Dave

Anywhere from about 4 inches to a few feet. There were a lot of people and I didn't want to hog up all the glass. I just made sure I shot perpendicular to the glass when it was thick and refraction was noticeable.
