I don't live there, but my GF lives just off the Veteran's at Anderson.
That is a pretty good location as you can get around to the main places pretty fast. TPA, International Mall, Citrus Park Mall, West Shore Plaza, and Raymond James are all a short drive either north or south on the Veterans from your office. You can also hop on 275 and take it to downtown or St. Pete. As far as your question, I'll answer them based off what I know: 1) Can't help 2) There are some nice areas where you can live good for not too much money (Carrollwood for example). Its not gonna be South Tampa nice, but its not the ghetto. 3) Ybor city. Look it up. 4) Don't really know, but there are some not so nice parts of Tampa I wouldn't be walking around at 2am. 5) Weather is usually nice, just like So. Fla. weather when I visit. But it is FL so random thunderstorms can appear out of nowhere.

Everything Seminole said is pretty spot on. To add to that, the humidity is pretty high a lot of the time and it gets really sticky outside. There are also a lot of ricers, even in the affluent areas like Old Carrollwood and South Tampa. I know there a lot of others, but I've got to head out. I like to think of Tampa as being a big city without having most of the big city drawbacks (like really heavy traffic, being overcrowded, expensive, etc).

1. A lot cheaper than the DC area 2. A lot less than the DC area. No state income tax. 3. Meh. 4. Depends on where you live. 5. HOT. And humid. My parents live in Bradenton, near Tampa, and they said it's brutal right now.

You need to check out Mons Venus. You may be drawn to go to the one across the street (Odyssey) with the flashy sign and giant spaceship on top of it, but it pales in comparison to Mons Venus.

Within three months of moving to Tampa a relative of mine endured three hurricanes.

We haven't had one in years. Last one was before Katrina, IIRC.
