The particular smilie- nope. Since MS Word came about only in the '80s, but this particular version of the W icon came about probably in the mid-nineties. The MS guys on this board can be more exact. I'm not sure when email programs supported smilies, but I would assume no earlier than the mid to late nineties. Maybe they were supported earlier on the CompuServe or AOL boards.

So when did "word" become vernacular? Before the internet? IMO it seems unlikely. Does anyone have an authoritative reference?

Got to talk to my IT guy about installing Word 2002.
I don't think the slang "word" has anything to do with MS Word.

The first smiley is generally accepted as having been used in 1982.

The ARPANET was brought online in 1969. Prior to the term "word" being used, the phrase was first used as "word up", and is generally thought to have been started in the 1980s.

So there you go:

1. Internet
2. Smilies.
3. Word.

"word" is probably the most esoteric of the three.

watch BET or listen to rap music...if you can't figure out what a word means and it's not in the dictionary, ask a black person for the definition

Nice to see an evidence-based argument for a change. Thanks!

Have we had enough fun?

The way that most trends work is that black people invent it, and then it filters up to the rich kids in suburbia, who copy it to get some street cred because they cant actually get it anywhere because they have to be home before 11 or else mommy will be pissed and take away their car.
