One of you Canon jokers needs to buy this :)
Check this out, was browsing on BH...
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...mm_f_5_6L.html This is also a pretty interesting write up. Give the sample images midway through the review a look, when you mouse over the various focal lengths you see how powerful of a zoom this lens is... http://www.the-digital-picture.com/R...ns-Review.aspx Last edited by forza1976; 05-22-2009 at 06:54 PM.. Technology moves on
I own a big white Canon supertele lens (though much smaller than the 1200) and can tell you that for almost any conceivable application I'd prefer their newer 800/5.6 IS for about 1/12th the price. Image stabilization makes a huge difference at long focal lengths and I suspect the detail resolved by the 800 under anything but absolutely perfectly still conditions is almost indistiguishable from that of the 1200.
The 1200 has a certain Moby-Dick-like fascination for Canonistas, but I don't think anyone but an ultrarich collector would actually want to own one. |

taken from the article..
"Using a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III, faces were recognizable at distances up to a mile or more. A higher density sensor such as that in the 50D or T1i should extend this distance to an even more incredible number. " A MILE or more! |

Sports Illustrated owns a couple of those, not sure who else. They're used quite a bit for sports shooting, especially baseball. That's how they can get photos of the batter from the perspective of the pitcher - a guy with a 1200mm lens is set up out past the center field wall, shooting toward home plate.
