Why does this surprise people? The W140 S-class coupe carried the S nomenclature for the first couple of years 92 - 94 after which they changed the name to CL.

Good move, the "C" make you think the car is somehow based off the C-class (and should therefore be priced accordingly).

This reminded me of a local shop that converted an S550 into a coupe. First thought that came to my head...why didn't they just buy a CL550 and call it a day?

I know it's just camo but the front end looks like an Acura.

This is going to get confusing though when I really think about it... they have 4 coupes in their line up currently. The CLC, CLK, CLS and the CL. The CL= S, CLK = E and assuming they follow the same lines of nomenclature, the CLC =C, what would they rename the CLS?

It's just weird though. They shoulda called it the "S" coupe to begin with. Renaming a model half way into its lifecycle is just weird.

Dont get me wrong the S-class coupe and E-class coupe are good names like the good old days, but the "CL" looks nothing like the S! They should at least have come up with the S-coupe name before launching it as a "CL".

Then again it's not the first weird thing manufacturers have done. Look at BMW's 3/M3 range. Very confusing.
