Try and find one with less miles, the E39 M5 is an absolute classic but you can find a better deal. . .I'd pass on this.

It's actually not that many miles for a 2001. It averaged 10k miles a year, which is lower than the typical car's average (12-15k a year). My 7 series is only 3 years older and has 165k miles...

Keep an eye out for something with less miles, even if it does cost a bit more. A well kept vehicle and a daily drive can make all the difference, especially for sports cars like these.

Not to poop on that car but it took me 3 minutes to find this one.
01' Asking $22,990. Clean reports noted. This is a great mileage car for an 01'. Maybe the best 5 body ever. I would not worry that much about repairs. A really good, honest and fair mechanic would be a major must have though.

A bit off topic.
Was a manual transmission available on the 06' M5? SMG is all I am seeing. 06' with 14,000 miles asking $41,000.

Thanks. I have read the SMG is harsh at times. ???
And no. It's Syd Barret. I am tired of looking at his feet too. Time for a change.

I was looking at an 06 with the SMG and it was so jerky that it would make me not want to take a chick out in it.
Sorry for being offtopic.

It is not a bad price for the mileage. The mileage is considered low, not high for a 2001.
I have owned my 2002 M5 for nearly two years now. It has been an outstanding vehicle. Sure, it's no Toyota in the reliability department, but then again, it doesn't drive anything near like my Toyotas either. You need have an pre-purchase inspection done on ANY car you buy. Let BMW or another competent independent shop go over the car with a fine tooth comb. Yes, a M5 can be expensive to fix, but then again, any BMW is. I have owned BMW's almost all my life and the parts are just expensive period. I also suggest you log in and read read read on the M5board.com. Look at the top of the E39 section, there are a BUNCH of threads about what to look for what to be aware of in these cars. Along with Titanium silver, Carbon black is one of the most popular colors out there. If you buy this one, or another, you will not be disappointed. This is a classic car with classic styling. There is a BIG reason why the newer E60's are going down in price, of course I am biased, but no E39 ever went down in price so quick. I feel really bad for all the new E60 owners that are loosing their pants on that car. A great car, but not as distinguished as the E39 (my opinion only, don't flame). Regards, John |

the picture showing the 56k mile car has a faulty dashboard, and a horid wooden dash steer clear.....
mines on 80k miles and tis fine, infact a lovely car. Drove to tuscany and back (3k miles) no issues and kept up with the other cars in attendance (911, c63 amg, 355 rari, boxster s, etc) without missing a beat...its a truely great car does everything...even went around the nurberg ring... Wouldnt want to own something like an X6 and watch the value fall through the floor like a lead balloon. Values in the UK are falling drastically for all cars, you can get an SL55 AMG 2003 for around £22k thats a £100k+ car.....thats just an example... E90 M5's go for around £22-25k 2005 etc keep to a low miler if possible but with maybe just two owners..... |

^Wood trim aside, what is faulty with the dash? Are you referring to the LED line in the odometer read out?

If it hasn't been done, will almost surely need front control arm bushings. Enquire about the brakes as well, this car goes through them fairly quickly, and they aren't cheap, and as I'm sure you know the rubber on this car is expensive too. Fuel pump good for around 70-75K miles.
At first blush, that is a little high for a 2001, but that isn't bad mileage at all for that age car. I think you can find a 2003 with comparable miles for pretty near that price. E39 M5 is truly one of the best cars ever, but perhaps not so as a daily driver considering all things, especially cost to own when you consider the dollar value of the car now. I wish I still had mine, but not as a daily driver. I'd look for an '03 if I were you. |
