I also found myself getting excited at possibilities of something else. I could actually roll this on the side too if I needed to. I have complete autonomy and so much can be done now from phone or computer.

I can't even imagine. That last part made me laugh. I remember those days. It is very rare to find tenure like that these days.

Changing employers is a big decision. I was unhappy, we bought a company and I was overseeing all of ops but after 13 years I had to report to someone who was not an owner and we go about things very differently so we clashed. He is a real boy scout, I am a "get it done" type and I couldn't live with the lack of accountability that filtered down to my people.

So I start poking around and it was difficult, not just the job hunt but let's say I am offered a new position for $30K more per year, sounds good yeah? But let's be pragmatic about it;

• 30K is 15K after taxes here (marginal rate is about 50%)
  Add commute cost of about $500 month (I WFH right now but also live 2 mins from the office) so that's another $6K
  I prep food in the house so less time for that so likely spend more on prepared food etc
  I'd lose about a full day a week commuting to downtown

SO add that all up and my 30K vanishes quite quickly and I also lose my tenure and severance security of about 18 months pay.

It's not as simple as it first seems.
