It's seems pretty easy to pull off. I get concerned that if I have a fire related to electrical will my insurance try to deny a claim because a licensed electrician didn't perform the work. Otherwise I think I'd do more electrical myself.

I have an electrician coming out next week to see what options I have for a hard wired EV charger. I have 200A service but it's split 100A back of house and 100A in garage. The back of house has all the heavies on it, but 100A is overkill. I'm not sure the wire running to the sub is rated for more than the 100A it's carrying. Ideally I'd like to make the sub panel 125A and leave the other panel 75A. Garage only has lighting, fridge and microwave. Lights are all LED. I'd like to be able to put in an 80A breaker for EV charger

Unfortunately I live in the suburbs and don’t trust my neighbors to mow their grass right much less do electrical work that could burn our houses down. Maybe once I get my hundred acres they could do what they want

There's not much risk to ac wiring as long as you don't hook anything up wrong. Its the DC wiring that really takes skill and good tools to put together when you get to the high current levels.

Getting the wiring wrong for a EV charger in your home could mean an additional fire risk as well as the EV itself, much better off with a hybrid that uses a normal electric socket or just a plain gas car, your home is then not at risk.
Does the home insurance cover should an EV charger station catch fire even if fitted by an approved electrician...

Hybrid 100% is where it's at. We have an x5e and love it. I'm leasing a pure electric electric as a 3rd car because I'm really curious about the range anxiety, charging infrastructure, etc.i haven't taken delivery of the electric yet.

The new Porsche 911 GTS is hybrid and weighs only about 100 lbs more than its non hybrid predecessor. That is pretty impressive to me, though I will probably be watching hybrid and EV development for a few more years rather than buying.

Wiring is done by pros, not home owners. No fires

What Porsche do to save weight on that hybrid is amazing but is it worth the big extra price tag for having an electric boost that soon runs out, an extra battery being carried as well as the lithium one on a relatively compact sports car.

I drove a family member's ioniq 5 yesterday... pretty fun to drive and it's amazing what they do with ev's suspension wise to mask the weight. I hope as many people buy EVs as want them, but there is zero chance we go anywhere near full EV because I'm only 35 and I'm not going to be buying an ev... ever?

Characterless, and I feel like all EVs feel basically the same to drive. Engineers will try to make them differentiated but it will be a very uphill battle.

I just let my car drive us home from a state park. Pretty cool. Even handled an area of construction with a lot of cones and stuff well.

For me its one of my biggest issues with Tesla, it’s bs marketing and promotion of “FSD” and how much they charge for it while having it tied to the car so you can’t transfer it even though you will have probably gone through several cars before and if it’s ever actually FSD.

That being said it’s quite impressive in what it can do. Would I actually let it drive me around town on it’s own? Fuck no! That doesn’t mean it’s not really cool though.

I do wish the steering worked more like the comma ai where you don’t have to yank the wheel from it, but rather as you give input it simply lets go. I think it feels much more natural than having to yank the wheel even for minor adjustments.

I'm hearing good things about GM super cruise. I look forward to giving it a try. Few things piss me off more on any given day than getting behind a Tesla that is on autopilot. It's slow, brakes 10 car lengths ahead of what is in front of it. Don't get me wrong. If every car was an automated Tesla we'd be fine, but they don't drive with the same characteristics as a person. Probably because it's driving safely :P

The issue with super cruise is it only works on mapped highways where autopilot works pretty much anywhere.

Honestly standard autopilot on the highway is fine. Unless I’m going into Miami which is basically destruction derby, I have no issues with standard autopilot on the highway and really that’s all I want it for. It’s really good adaptive cruise and lane centering. Now if you have the FSD you can set how aggressive or not you want it to be. The times I’ve used it (they have offered a free trial a couple times, I wouldn’t pay for it) I always set it to chill and minimal lane changes.

On the city streets its a totally different thing. It’s super cautious and most of the times I disengage it is because it’s taking too long or is going to miss a light etc. Having it cross a main road to make a left, with traffic coming from both directions, now that will make you pucker up real good!

Then again I pucker up when my gf drive also so… I guess I just like being in control and knowing what I’m going to do next.

I'm pretty loyal to BMW and I've already had everything cool in terms of their current offerings (X5M, M8, etc). Not really feeling the new M5 so I decided to go with an I7 X-Drive 60. It's my first EV and I really like it.....then again, it's a 7 so it's not a basic EV by any means. 7's are already quiet in ICE form.....so obviously the i7 is like a bank vault.

I was paying $2500/month for the M8 and $650 or so in gas per month. I am paying $1200 for the I7 due to incentives and will pay about $150/month in electric. I didn't see the point of paying $500 more in gas per month for an ICE 760i not to mention the rebates were way less and the money factor (I lease) was way higher. I'm basically saving $1,800 month from what I was spending on the M8 ($156k MSRP versus $138k on the I7). That's some major coin for a $18k difference in MSRP.

Doesn't mean I will stay an EV person forever or even past this car.....but the cost savings to me were worth it although my example probably isn't the usual situation. I've never loved the look of the new 7.....but it's tolerable in black with the M-Sport and M-Sport Professional packages. No, it's not the fastest EV....but that's just a fight you aren't going to win unless you have a Plaid...and Teslas are shitty and dime a dozen. I needed something with a usable back seat, too (which crossed the Taycan off my list).

i mean, if you cant wire it up properly yourself, you shouldnt be doing it.

but, its no different than wiring up an outlet. Just bigger wire and higher voltage.

And yes, your insurance should cover unless it is proven you did it wrong on purpose.
