An update on Max (aka. MaxiCat aka Catticus Maximus). I think I posted in another thread, but didn't do it here.
Long story short: torn left rear Achilles tendon. Two separate PRP procedures and about a dozen shockwave procedures couples with a custom orthotic. The specialty rehab vet is STOKED-- his recovery has been nothing less than amazing for a 14 year-old cat. He's gaiting normally and putting weight on the tendon. He's allowed to wander around without his orthotic as long as he's supervised-- i.e. no jumps. So, he's pretty much bootless all day in his heated basket while Mom's at work (he supervises her when she's working from home), and then he goes back into the boot at night so he doesn't jump off the bed.... again. He's also losing weight, which is a condition to getting the boot off. He was 15.1 lbs today, with a goal of ~14. He's not thrilled with the boot since his leg is working normally and not hurting, but he's adapted to it surprisingly well. Target to go fully bootless is May of next year-- that's a year after his second PRP treatment, and the tendon should be back to full strength by then. We're all very, very happy. He's a "once in a lifetime cat" and we were worried he'd be in the boot for the rest of his (hopefully long) life. R.

We had good luck with those foam mini-stairs to let our old cat make it up onto/off of the bed (ours is raised up nearly 3ft high). Not sure if those would work in your place, but thought I'd mention it. |

In our case, we had to train her to use the stairs. Maybe trick her is a better word. We put cat treats on the steps and next thing you know, she figured it out.

We got it pretty quickly after he hurt himself. Pretty spendy for what it is, but worth every penny. It took *maybe* 10 minutes to train him to use it-- Max is nothing if not food oriented, so we put a treat on each step and a couple on the bed and that's all it took. Now, he uses it every time he wants up, and about 95% when he wants down. It's great..... except that his orthotic can *hurt* if he thumps you in the wrong spot! R.

Yes like that. Yours is much nicer that the ones we got (ours were more a square-step - that one looks evven better for cat-sized steps).
-And getting bedding that matches the fur - kudos for catparent-genius-level. Last edited by Maynard; 09-26-2024 at 06:48 AM.. |

Max *adores* the white fuzzy blanket (which is why it's on the bed in the summer). He won't sleep without it, so if we leave in off the bed, it's "Meow, Meow, Meow, paw, paw, paw" on my wife until she concedes defeat and lays it back on the bed. Then? He's happy and curls up next to Mom for bedtime. R.
