These days I primarily judge guitars by their playability and acoustic qualities these days since once they’re plugged in, pickups can be tailored to the guitar’s resonance and tonal qualities. I assume it is similar with bass? Obviously though I’m not well versed enough with bass to judge them acoustically as my ear hasn’t been trained to it. The next step for me I think will just be getting a consensus good all around bass (P Bass seems like a safe bet) and just playing to develop technique and decide what tonal qualities I like.
I always try out a bass unplugged before I plug it in. I'll even put my chin on the top horn to get direct feel for the tone and find any "dead spots" on the neck. If it doesn't sound good to my ears (and chin) acoustically, unplugged, I don't bother plugging it in.

You'll get used to the longer scale, just as a sax player gets used to switching between a tenor and an alto sax.

Got a Cordoba Mini II Bass over the Holiday. Forgot to take pictures, but I love this thing thus far. Short neck with all the usual frets, allows you to really stretch for some interesting chords. Have a few other bass guitars at home, again no pics haha. Debating picking a guitar and learning to play that soon, also want a keyboard!

Ooh, I had a Gibson red cherry one. My hands were too small for that so I had to sell it.

I considered the Gibson version, but just could not see $1300 in differences in them.

Frankly all I'll use if for is to do home recording anyway. I just like having guitars with different sonic characteristics

Interesting, I don't remember spending $x,xxx on it though , maybe inflation? ...but ya, I'm more into humbuckers.

I've got my old 1970's Ibanez Les Paul (first guitar I bought and my workhorse for years) and a PRS SE245 with humbuckers. So no need for another one with them

So I was out goofing around with my son this afternoon and I get a notification from FedEx saying that my order from Sweetwater had delivered. Huh? I didn’t order anything! Home fast, because the box is just sitting by the door. I got a little worried that maybe I sent an order by mistake? I tell my son I gotta call my guy before we open this because this isn’t right! He played it off for a bit, but finally admitted he knew where it came from. My BIL has a very substantial collection of gear/guitars, and the crazy (and generous) guy bought it and wanted to send it to me in the hospital for my birthday back in February! They wouldn’t ship there… What a great present! Hello Frankie! Welcome to the family!

My latest pickup. Martin 000-15m

I'm certainly playing it some now, but it is mostly in preparation for retirement in a couple of years.

An acoustic in the house. Nice choice. All-mahogany. I played on a couple years ago and really loved the size and sound. Enjoy.

I’m guessing all of you have a favorite pick that is just flat out the one that works for you. Me too. Last night I was sitting at my desk banging away at some random jam that was just flowing out like butter, and oops, dropped my favorite pick in the sound opening. Dammit. Flipped the guitar over and begin shaking, and it finally came out. Problem is, I can’t find it!! No idea where it went. I looked for 10 minutes and nothing. Finally said screw it, got on Amazon to look for similar. Nothing. Ordered the next best (I thought) thing. Arrived a while ago and nope, not even close. Then proceeded to take everything out of my desk drawer and way back in the back found another one! I’m stoked! It’s almost like sand paper, and ironically holds on to my fingers better than any other. A smooth pick I drop in a hot second…. Thank goodness for backups!

I forgot about this thread. A couple of weeks ago I picked up a Sire Marcus Miller U5 (short scale). I absolutely love this bass! The sound is incredible and I love playing it much more than my Gretsch. I have the neck pickup at 100% and the bridge pickup & tone at about 20%.

Here's a stock photo of the Gretsch (my actual guitar is cased and missing a couple of strings; longish story) and a picture of the used Sire I bought. The Sire was about $100 less than a new one, so it being pre-stressed doesn't bother me; saves me the trouble

Ya, I dunno why the makers didn't think of that from the beginning. Ironically, I think my fingers are too used to the smooth ones as the textured ones i use just don't feel right: the rough surfaces are too high up and I like to hold my pick closer to the tip.
