Thumbs Down Feature.

Can we get a thumbs down feature/button/icon like some other popular websites/forums have?

You have a thumbs up feature/button/icon, so why not a thumbs down feature?

Because it's bullshit, that's why. Another popular website (YouTube) has the button but stopped displaying it's counter recently. Does it do the math with "up" now or what? No bullying, to put it simply.

I just personally witnessed an abuse of the thumbs-down feature on another forum that I read, where each click deducts a point from the user's reputation.

Two adults got into a childish argument, and one of them thumbs-downed every single post ever made by the other one. The psychopath spent DAYS doing it, apparently by hand on each individual message. The victim had ZERO reputation points when the attack ended.

TL;dr - it isn't worth the headaches.....

I hear you, and I agree, but I also see a lot of useless posts on the forum that have nothing to do with the thread(s) topic being posted on here by forum members or bots that it would be easier to just give them a thumbs down than to report them as spam or as someone breaking the forum rules.

It's even easier to ignore them. They are shitting so explicitly exactly because it's not reputation they are seeking (using one post accounts, by the way). Spammers are looking for presence, scammers are looking for your privacy (most insolently, see the neighboring threads here).

If you report them (convincingly) they should get cleared. If you don't like them it's only mutual.

Now look at the spammer adopted in the OT section. When reported and cleared promptly elsewhere it does return preemptively. Having been put on the lap and provided with tit toys it seats quietly (in OT, still ashitting elsewhere) so far (busy playing?). Try to appreciate it: that might make it remove the spam links. May be.

This forum actually had it during the early days before they got rid of it. You can find abandoned or seldom-used accounts with negative reputation points.

This website assumes that you have enough maturity to just ignore the post, although clearly not everyone does.

Oh wow! I don't remember ever seeing it.

And almost everyone does that. But it would be a good feature to flag trolling.

Thumb down features generally don't improve the atmosphere on forums imho....

I’d give this post a thumbs down if we had that here. Please, no.

See.... You wouldn't have to use one of your famous memes whenever you didn`t like a post if we had that on here.

I vaguely remember seeing users with minus rep points. Forgot about it till you brought it up.

We all know how the use of rating systems has evolved over time: evaluations everywhere. Legitimate or questionnable: depends on the circumstances.

Also, with the world getting increasingly connected, rating systems can contribute in fighting abuse and bad practices (despite 'pro & con' limations).

We equally all know that rating systems can be abused both by keyboard warrior trolls (ill intentions) as well as by those who got a personal interest in getting excellent ratings (fake/inflated top ratings). Abusers benefit from the lack of accountability: it's relatively anonymous, it's easy to lie and hit/hurt and it's often penalty-free.

Forum members who are a bit longer around at Bimmerpost recall that the 'like' button ("Appreciate") was introduced years ago to improve readability of threads: less scrolling through comments copying a comment with merely "+1" added. Already back then, it was a deliberate choice to steer clear from introducing a 'dislike' button.

With awarding a 'like', you express a concurrent view (you flow with the 'current' of the expressed point of view), so less need for explanation of your 'like'. However, with awarding a 'dislike' you express an opposing view (you go against the 'current' of the comment). Hence, if you dislike a comment: either ignore that comment or speak up. Posting a 'dislike' comment always takes more intellectual effort than a lightning-quick 'fire and forget' click on a 'dislike' button.

Either you post a mere "-1" comment (but do know that the criticized forum member may ask you to elaborate your point of view) or, even better, explain the reasons for disliking/criticizing the comment. By doing so, the criticized forum member, as well as anyone else reading the thread, has a better understanding of the ongoing discussion and can participate (eventually giving your 'dislike' comment a 'like'), correct a possible misunderstanding, add additional reasons, explain a different side of the story, etc. In other words, it improves mutual understanding of respective points of view.

For example:

-1
However, if you deem a comment to be in violation of the forum rules ('gross dislike' or spam), click the triangle on the left section of the comment to warn admins and moderators. They will decide what action to take. But please avoid becoming trigger-happy with the triangle button: another forum member explaining to prefer a different car color than yours, is in principle not violating the forum rules. However, a forum member stating that point of view in a racist/derogatory/insulting way (instead of criticism stated in a 'civil' or even rather 'abrasive' way), is a violation of the forum rules.

Do know that, generally speaking, to detect spam bots, admins and moderators also pay special attention to a low post-count.

Hope this helps. And definitely got no problem if you reply to this comment with a mere "-1" comment (except if keyboard warrior trolls chime in for a round of abuse). But do know that I may reply with a "Please elaborate your point of view." reply comment.

^^^ Thanks. I appreciate the -1 on my post.

That is probably the best way to give someone a thumbs down on a post without hurting their feelings
