First time transmission issues on N54 auto
Hey guys,
My transmission is beginning to act up and I'm not quite sure where to look. It has 107k miles and has had one fluid change along with the pan and mechatronic sleeve at 97k. Bridge adapter, solenoids, and tube seals are still original. It has a Sutphin custom tune on it and has never acted up until the past month or so. Symptoms: 1) It's begun to start out in D2 about half the time, which I don't believe the tune is supposed to allow (or at least it never used to do this). 2) About once a week, I'll get a recurrent gear warning when in park. No trans codes in MHD, XHP, or INPA. 3) The 1-2 shift has become a bit sloppy, almost feeling like a CVT until it finally grabs halfway through second. I'm not sure if this would be considered slip, but to me it seems like it. WOT or in Sport or Manual mode it shifts perfectly. But normal throttle in D it's there most of the time, occasionally shifting normally. 4) Twice now, both times after gassing up, it'll THUD really loud when shifting to D and will then be in D4. It will very slowly work its way down to D1 or D2 with a few more thuds. Here's the weirdest part. 2 times in the past few weeks, I've gotten the ABS/trac/DSC trifecta. They'd go away after about 10 minutes but I did manage to scan it with INPA and get a few faults, looking like the usual wheel speed sensor suspects I believe. Are these issues related? Think my trans is just getting tired/in need of maintenance or is there a speed sensor somewhere throwing it off? https://www.youtube.com/shorts/nbZ5NAz8Btw If I can rule out a trans hardware issue as separate from any speed sensor issues, I think my plan would be to drop the pan/valve body, do a ZIP kit, new solenoids, tube seals and bridge adapter. If that doesn't fix it, manual swap time. But i'd love a little direction, which is hard with no codes lol. Any advice is much appreciated! |

Update: it's getting worse.
The other day, I was driving in traffic, it was in D2 and it started feathering in and out of gear like one was feathering the clutch on a manual. I came to a stop with traffic and it went THUD about 5 times, all while sitting in D1. Felt like the rough downshift, but it was already in first. The gear cog never comes up on the dash unless I'm in park. Still no codes. |

I'm currently building my cart in FCP, I've got the 4 tube seals, foam strip, bridge adapter, mechatronic sleeve, and all solenoids. i'm going to skip the zip kit I initially considered as I think these should sort it out. Rockauto has a good deal on lifeguard 6 so I'll order up some of that too and keep you guys posted! Last edited by whyzee125; 04-10-2024 at 01:38 PM.. |

Update: I replaced my right rear wheel speed sensor, as the codes suggested, and my trans woes have completely gone away. All codes, warnings, weird symptoms, gone.
I'm still going to do my seals and solenoids to hopefully get my adaptation values down which should extend my transmission's life but it's shifting great with no issues at all. |
