F1: Alonso to Aston Martin for 2023?!

I thought it was an April fools joke in August but it's definitely not. Alonso is joining Aston Martin in 2023. I thought he enjoyed Alpine...anyone else a bit shocked at the move? Maybe he wasn't getting along with/tired of battling Ocon?

Glad to see, Alonso truly is the last of the old guard since Kimi retired. I just hope AM can get a better car for him. It’s rough watching the elite level drivers in cars that are no better than midfield on their best day.

Agreed, I'm happy he's sticking around and I hope Aston Martin builds the car around him.

I think it worked out for both actually:

Alonso is clearly driving fantastic and wants to keep driving for more than one year, which Alpine offered, but Aston Martin offered him a two year deal and I'm sure a lot of money. Alpine is definitely ahead of Aston Martin now BUT next year is next year.

Alpine clearly knows Piastri is the future and they do not have the option of giving ALO more than one year, as Ocon is signed to 2024.

Better for ALO to be at Aston next year.

For sure Ocon is a douche. Happy when ALO is helping him out but lets rivals go through and defends like a Lion against ALO. In hindsight, ALO would have rethought defending as hard as he did against HAM last year which allowed Ocon to win.

What happened to Alonso's "El Plan" for Alpine ? Did not expect him, the very talented driver, to become a pension fund pay driver for Lawrence Stroll.

Alonso is the old wolf of the pack: knows the tricks of the trade, but seems to focus on his bank account now.

I don't know how to feel about this.

Alpine is obviously the better car and is capable of fighting the top teams but their whole operation and Otmar are whack. Aston the team has potential but their car is really behind. Lawrence is a successful businessman and he wants results immediately - which is the right mindset for him just not F1 development.

He deserves it.

I genuinely believe he is still a championship contender in the right car.

For me for sure the Alpine is the better car compared to the Aston Martin, so I don't know if it's a good move for Alonso.

However he's made it clear multiple times this year that Alpine's strategy and doing this year has cost him a lot of potential points so maybe he's just a bit fed up with the team.

And 20million yearly is of course a nice amount of money (not that he needs that...) but the amount of money is of course also a sign for the amount of appreciation.

Agree. One thing for sure is Lance Stroll gets to drive with his hero which for Stroll Sr. is a consideration. He hopes also that Stroll Jr. gets to pick up ALO's race craft and becomes an elite Driver himself.

Vettel since being outclassed by Ricciardo at RB has not been the same driver when he won his 4 championships so he did not deliver the impact the Stroll Sr. was hoping to get.

Alonso was clearly not amused about what Ocon did to him at the Hungaroring. No good atmosphere between those two.

Ocon has two benefits: he is French (cf. Alpine) and he's managed by Toto Wolff. But that's about it - just an average F1 driver. Must not have been a great prospect for Piastri to know that Ocon would be his 2023 team mate.

Latest rumours are that Ricciardo goes to Alpine and Piastri signs with McLaren...(instead of Piastri going to Alpine)
But every day is a new rumour....
