What Products to Use For Rock Chip?

Went on a road trip last week and got my first rock chip. Wondering what kind of products you guys recommend.

I know I'm going to get some flack for this, but I actually like BMW touch-up kits.

I know I know, clear coat in those kits are like shoe glue, but you really want that property when working on vertical surface. You can't build a proper crown if it would be less viscose. And if I need to work on horizontal surfaces, then I can always cut it with some n-butyl acetate (paint thinner) to make it more runny if that is desired.

There is no perfect finish for stone chips, but two step procedure (clear on top of paint) is how your current paint is applied from the factory and that is the method that is going to give you the best result if that is what you are after. You do need sanding and polishing equipment, though. BMW says you can use it without any sanding or polishing, which is true, but results would be really sad.

Dr. Colorchip is a far easier user experience that wont require any special tools, but finish is reflected in that ease of use.

Never seen Dr Colorchip - very interesting. Great video. I have used "Scratches Happen" kit before and recently on my Audi on a lower front bumper boo boo and it worked and matches perfectly.

I like Dr Colorchip for the simple fact that the paint actually matches, unlike a lot of BMW touch up kits. I remember buying BMW alpine white paint and it wasn't even close.

You might be right. I googled for it and didn't come up with any OE results. I wonder why isn't there a kit available for this color?

There are several current colors that aren't available. If I am not mistaken Skyscraper Grey is another one missing.

I have a Dravit Grey kit from Dr. Color Chip. Paint match is dead on. It sucks that I have become quite proficient touching up an occasional rock chip on my M4C. LOL..

Yep BMW don't make a Brooklyn Grey touch-up paint at this time. My local body shop mixed one for me and it matches the color 99%.

Dr Colorchip hands down for regular people and experts alike. If you need more than that, you’re probably better off repainting the whole panel or affected areas.

I'll second the use of DrColorChip also. We've used it for over 15 years on various cars, and my wife is an expert with it by now. Note that best results are found on darker color cars (in our case: LeMans Blue, Imola Red, Electric Red) versus lighter colors (in our case: Ti Silver and Silverstone). On the darker colors, the repaired chip is almost impossible to see from more than a foot away whereas on a silver hood, for example, the repaired chip is easier to spot.

On my LeMans blue E39 M5, the lower part of the bumper cover had a fair amount of rash/specs that looked awful from 4-5 feet away. After DCC "smear method", the cover looked brand new from 2-3 feet away or more...it was only when you would get right up close to it that you could see the filled in chips.

Another vote for Dr. Colorchip. Have used it for years on a variety of cars and the match is always perfect, the finish is also very good especially if you polish with a mild finishing polish once cured.

here's a few pics of my glacier silver x5 and a hood dent/scratch that i considered a full respray on. i ended up getting PDR and then did several layers of Dr Colorchip to "fill" the scratch. overall i'm happy with the results.

That came out awesome. Did you do any polishing? Like others have said BMW doesn’t have my color skyscraper grey so I bought a DCC kit. I have a small chip on the rear bumper from my metal wallet falling out of my pocket. Ugggg. Started using it yesterday with less then desirable results.
