Classic years determined by....

Greetings from Seattle,
I am the proud owner of a beloved 2007 Z4M roadster in Imola Red with black interior.

I searched this specific thread for clarity regarding the definition of a classic car and found so many options online I didn't find it helpful to copy them in this thread.

This thread states Pre-2005 Models are considered classics for this thread.

Can someone help with the process that was used to define this thread's pre-2005 models as classics.

Regards
Racerbruce

If you want to call your car a Classic, just call it a Classic. If the thread adjust annually, you'll be in it eventually, anyway!

Interesting question. I think it's like pornography, I can't define it but I know it when I see it.....might be the rum talking. Nice car by the way.

I'm about 90% sure this 2005 cutoff is solely because bimmerpost has been the main bmw forum since the e9x which is 2006 onwards. Before that everyone was on e46fanatics, e30tech, r3vlimited, etc--so all the 2006+ cars have a dedicated subforum on this board

Pretty much spot on. Mostly everything after 2005 has it's own forum on here whereas most pre-2005 models do not hence this is an area where all those models can be discussed, be it BMW classics or BMW modern classics.

Lovely Z4M by the way!

There is no definitive answer for "classic". LIkewise for sporty or even antique - as they vary from person to person. Similarly, people calling anything with a back seat, or four doors, a sports car.... To me a sports-car (using the classic definition) has 2 doors and two seats. You, however, can use whatever criteria you prefer as, in the end, makes no difference.

In Colorado you can’t get Collector plates unless the vehicle is 25 years old.
RealOEM has the cutoff for the BMW “Classic” catalog at the E36, E38, E39, Z8 (nlt 2003).

I can get calling a car a classic at about 20 y/o, anything less isn’t a classic yet. It’s just an older model, no matter how nice. 14 years old? Nope. Patience a few more years, it’ll get there, no rush…

If it’s just a tag-name used here for all cars/years which don’t have a dedicated Bimmerpost - fine, but that’s kinda lazy..

Also, for me, a classic car has far more to do with the overall esthetics, function, design, performance... of a vehicle than just age. For example - 1969 Ferrari Daytona = classic..... 1979 AMC Rambler or Rebel......not so much. Of course, everyone's idea/ideal for "Classic Car" will be different.

One caveat... there were certain 2006 holdovers like my E46 ZHP convertible, so 2006+ for modern does have a few loopholes. 2007 is definitely safe as far as I can remember, but 2006 can be a bit grey.

Spot on! There will indeed be a few that fall out of the 2005 label. A E53 X5 is a good example since these started production around 2000 and ended around 2006-ish? There is also no E53 forum.

In my opinion though, I would class the E46 and E53 as a modern classic.

At the moment, ETK categorizes Z3 as "classic":

There is still a board up for your generation. Generally I consider anything post-1995 a "classic" or "modern classic" at this point in time.

I am so glad to see this thread already exists. I want to call up the dealership or someone high up in BMW Group Classic and get (beg) them to reproduce some NLA parts! I guess I'll have to wait :l

Tags: bmw classic requirements age minimums criteria
BMW Group Classic's website does not state their criteria and imo that is crap.

Suggestions for E53 (OG X5) forum? I'm looking to buy one. Doesn't seem to be much out there for this model.
