Wrestling

Got my 10 yr old involved in wrestling - he's liking it - thankfully. Want him to learn more discipline from men besides me and these coaches are great.

Any advice or input about the sport specifically? I have zero background knowledge of the sport.
I did rowing, lacrosse and baseball.

Thank you,

Ringworm is part/parcel with wrestling. It goes away with medication.

You, as a the proud, supportive father that you are, will sit HOURS on hard benches to watch your son wrestling for 9 minutes, tops. Invest heavily in bleacher seats/cushions. You can thank me later.

My middle son was CIF southern finalist his senior year at 152. Went on to captain of junior college team. He started the end of football season as a junior.

Only one concussion, but man that was rough in the ER. He wouldn't shut up about the match over and over and over . . . and over and over and over . . . and over

I'd wait on learning moves like the pile driver and bodyslam until he's a little older.

Other than physical abilities a good wrestler must be mentally tough, confident, willing to learn and listen, focused, disciplined, great work ethic and able to adapt. Must have the drive to win.

Ringworm and staph infections are common. Eating disorders due to weight cutting are too. Try to discourage the weight cutting and perhaps help him maintain his walking around weight close to his competition weight later on if he sticks with it. Misery loves company. If my old man cleaned up our diet as much as I had to during season I would probably not have had to yo-yo so much. Wrestling was absolutely one of the best things I ever did to build discipline and work ethic. I think most martial arts teach the same values.

I don't fully understand the weight cutting aspect - doesn't a little fat help a person have some stored energy reserves? Seems counterintuitive to me to try to lose so much weight before a fight, yet I know most fighters do it.

I've had my own experiences with overly controlled eating when I played college lacrosse, I will definitely do my best to help my son in that dept, like you said keeping his walking around weight.

When you’re a healthy/strong at a normal 175lb and cut to 145 range you are leaps and bounds stronger then those guys that are 145 at their regular. That’s the reason for it.

Wrestling is a GREAT sport.

My son wrestled all through middle school, high school and got into a D1 program to finish off his wrestling career. It will take a HUGE commitment and dedication from your child and his entire support staff. For a 10 year old, I would advise joining a wrestling club if that exists in your area. There will be a lot of competition among kids his age and can be a lot of fun.

He’s a husky kid not fat but big - so he’s doing his best when it comes to all the running - but overall Im very proud of his effort level - he has to be invited to compete - which hasn’t happened yet and I don’t expect it will until about the 6 month mark - he’s been at it for 3 months or so.

That’s awesome your son got into a d1 for wrestling - you must have been so proud ☺️

A kid I watched grow up on the baseball fields since his dad coached my son. This kid never really wanted to play/follow his dad's footsteps, he was just always playing around.

Last weekend, as a Freshman, he qualified for CIF Southern section finals and earned his letter @ 108 lbs. UNFORTUNATELY, right now he's down for the count with some ear infection, and the first round is Saturday. Pulling for him!
