First BMW in over 20 years. Advice?

The last BMW I owned was a ‘96 318ti sport that I bought new off the dealer’s lot. I ordered a 2023 m240i xdrive that should arrive at the dealer this week.

What should I look out for when I go to the dealer to finalize the purchase and pick up the car?

Congrats on your purchase!!!

With the exception of a tire and wheel plan which depending on the dealer may be a good deal for you don't buy any of the other packages and additional coverage that the finance manager tries to sell to you. They make more money on them than selling you the car.

Make sure that your salesperson and the dealer's "Genius" spend enough time with you explaining all of the features of the car and how to properly use your iDrive. Have them sync your cellphone to the car while you are there.

Also ask about the benefits of using the "Adaptive" driving mode in the M240i. One of my best friends has an M240i and that is his favorite driving mode. I have it on my Z4 and always use it.

Depends on how much you care? Sounds weird.. but it's no different than buying it off the lot. Scratches, dents, panels all line up. All the accessories and mats.. I asked for no decals from the company, no front plate drilled. Otherwise.. the rest of the things you ordered is all linked to your Vin. They'll most likely run through all the idrive functions and tell you that you can come back in a month for another refresher course if you want. I was tempted just for fun but I didn't really need to.

Very good point above.. double check that if you actually need all season tires in your area what tires you got on the car! On my last car I didn't know that if you got the larger wheels it only came with summer tires. The wheel protection warranty is not as good as it used to be.. too many caveats.

I believe this depends on the coverage of dealer and the tire/ wheel plan that your dealer is selling.

I purchased a 5 year plan for $2000 that covers unlimited tire replacement, replacement or repair of 4 wheels and paintless dent repair (dings). In the first year I already had 2 rear tires replaced because of nails they picked up from my wonderful Florida roads. They are 19 inch Michelin Pilot Super Sports which as you know are not cheap and if I had to go out and purchase them instead it would have cost me almost 50% of what I paid for this plan.

I have no doubt that I will come out ahead and that this coverage will have saved me money by the time I sell my Z4 which I plan to keep for a few years.

to continue on rice_rocket88's good suggestion.

pick up the car during the day-time and if indoors have them roll it outside into direct sun for further inspection ( check headlining and upholstery for rips check windshield headlight lenses for tiny chips )

inspect and start the car before they have you sit down for the paperwork

and when signing the paperwork do review and anything with your signature get a copy of.

Hopefully you chose the right dealership and the experience will be a good one for you!

Download and activate the MyBMW app prior to arriving at the delivery.

Enjoy your new ride!

What did you do with the E36/5?

Great advice, definitely download the app prior to taking delivery and have them do the login for you.

I sold the 318ti after 95,000 miles, a marriage, and a move to Chicago. It was a fun little car.

Funny. I thought adaptive was only a z4 or 8 series thing as most cars don't have it. I sometimes do switch to adaptive in my z4 but it honestly isn't any different from comfort imo. Drivetrain chassis ans transmission are basically in comfort mode when in adaptive, or am I missing something? Is it supposed to watch ur driving behavior and predict when to send more power with much less throttle press vs comfort? I don't get it but it's nice to have a button there while other I drive 7 or 8 cars don't lol
