I still didn't get the X3 sold yet.

Somehow, me and 48-gabillion others were on the line with BMWFA yesterday because we received a notice our payment was late. F-ME! I electronically transferred to you back on 6/17! Send us a screen shot. But, I need a payoff amount, so I can sell this thing off!!!!!

Pull it online.

Sooo, SA just called. He said that a bolt to the drive shaft got elongated after the previous repair and pretty much broke off. It scratched/damaged the heat panels. They have to replace the Giubo and drop the exhaust to check it out but think it's only cosmetic damage. Parts are due in tomorrow and it should be ready by Friday. I don't know if I care.

The first time I was in for one day - they blamed a failed remote software update

25 days - 2nd time. Got towed in Tuesday May 31st, picked up Friday June 24th

This will be a 5 day thing I believe. They said I should be done Friday.

I believe 30 days is where you can make a solid lemon law case, so …..wait until you can pick up the car before dropping the buy-back bomb on them.

It's actually 15 days in NY:

I don't know how I feel about this. The fact that a bolt broke and it wasn't some other crazy issue kind of issue makes me feel better EXCEPT shouldn't the bolt thing have been caught when they were putting it back together last time? I just don't know....

Don't second guess yourself. You have every right at this stage to start the buy-back conversation. Don't allow any dealership exec to minimize the inconvenience and impact of your feelings of safety with the vehicle. Stand your ground.

He spelled it for me

A giubo, also known as a flex disc, and sometimes misspelled as guibo, is a flexible coupling used to transmit rotational torque between the drive shaft and the companion flange on mechanical devices, such as an automobile engine.

But I guess you already know what it is.

I agree.

Unless she really likes the vehicle. Maybe that will be the last problem. If she likes it why not wait and see? Sounds like it was a small thing.

The guibo broke? Lmao, what the fuck are they doing?

As far as I know you generally replace the guibo every 10-15 years, if not more. The fact that it broke is kind of ridiculous...

Also: what was the last repair? I must've missed the mark on that. But basically (not sure if you know) the guibo is basically the middle man between the transmission and your driveshaft. Did they remove the transmission/engine last time you were in there? Incorrectly torquing that alone is worthy of causing a scene, which I would recommend. If my guibo broke after a repair at the dealer I'm either getting them to buy back the car or getting it repaired and driving straight to carvana/carfax.

If this was another fishing expedition with all the crazy tech and stuff, I wouldn't hesitate to fight to get out of it. I guess my question is, being that it was a bolt, albeit a possible mechanic screw up, is it still a safety issue? I'd really appreciate any feedback from you guys.

They replaced the Valvetronic Unit and the eccentric shaft.

I have never personally lemoned a car or requested the buy-back, but friends have successfully done it. The closest I've ever come to a vehicle replacement was when my '03 E46 ///M3 motor blew up. It was during the VANOS/DME issues plaguing the then-new E46 ///M3. BMW had my car for 45 days while a new motor was sent from Germany. I was provided a 100,000 mile power train warranty and a 5-Series loaner the duration of that time my car was in the shop, so I didn't escalate the situation.

Yes absolutely - I can see that the guibo bolts have a torque spec of 20Nm with a 45deg angle of rotation. Means of how I have this info is a different conversation, but I am looking at official BMW repair spec.

I would seriously doubt how well they read the instructions before/during replacement of such an important part. Also concerningly is that they replaced the eccentric (assuming front prop shaft to transfer box) shaft along with the Valvetronic. That basically sounds like "we need to do heart surgery but also we caught something is wrong with your arm so we took care of it too".

It is a safety issue at the very least on the dealer level. That bolt shearing off sounds like it was overtightened, and as you were accelerating to merge the highway it snapped. In BMW's defense they have the spec but obviously it is up to the service techs to follow it.

But this repair along with the Valvetronic is the concerning part for me. I think an avenue to explore would be "I bought this high-performance vehicle to enjoy it within legal limits, but also in the way it was designed. I am no longer comfortable owning this vehicle after the extent of the repairs done, especially in questionable manners"

My vintage open-wheel Formula Vee race car (based on VW Beetle platform) used the factory VW leather/rubber giubo to connect the steering column to the steering box. First thing that I did to that car was swap out the giubo with a mechanical universal joint.....

I'm sorry for overwhelming the Confess thread with all my vehicle woes. I do have a thread in the F96 forum and there are some helpful members there but I value the opinion of my OT buddies.
