Reason for screen change in new models?

Apple announced new functionality from Carplay that takes over all the screens in a car. The demo picture almost matches the new screen design and the article mentions that Porsche, Mercedes, and Audi will support it. Doubt BMW will be the only German manufacturer to not support it if it means the X3 mom buyer will consider a different car.

BMW was planning to change to the "all screen" set up before this move from Apple was considered.

Developing for additional screens probably took Apple years and most likely required buy-in from major car manufacturers before development even began. I doubt a company like Apple would spend thousands of engineering hours on a product only to have it be denied by a bean counter at Honda.

Developing a music/map app for the center screen is nothing like developing a digital tachometer. Apple lawyers would crucify someone if someone crashed their car because they couldn't read their speed from a Carplay bug.

Second thread on this. No big deal. As long as I have wireless bluetooth I am fine. I dont need Apple and more distractions making their way into my car. I just need to play my media.

I may be in the minority, but I prefer the native BMW navigation to CarPlay’s.

I wish Carplay would integrate with the OEM BMW nav. It would be nice to see Waze in my Instrument Cluster.

That’s because Google hasn’t bothered to add the functionality to Waze/GMaps.

If you use Apple Maps you get directions displayed on the cluster and HUD. Works great in my 2020 X3 G01.

As to whether this new dashboard-wide version of CarPlay comes to some or all of the brands that apple spoke about in the presentation is anyones guess.

When driving at night and I like viewing my HUD for directions and do use BMW's nav system. However I would love to see Waze integrated into it.

I don't see a need for Google Maps when you already have Waze.

I never use Apple Maps and seriously doubt I ever will.

Or Google, or Waze, or whatever.
