Also looking for recommendations on pants and pack.
Pants need to be wind proof and comfortable. Temps when we hike in Aug-Sept will not be arctic cold. We will likely wear thermals under the hiking pants. Regarding pack, I’m thinking 30 liter size or thereabouts. We aren’t bivouacing and there is no need for a huge load of provisions. Simply enough water and food for a 6 hour hike or so, after which we return either to a hut or parking lot. Deuter is my preferred brand of pack. Does anyone have a favorite pack brand in the 30-liter class? |

I bought these LL Bean wintersport pants for local hiking and cold weather riding. These may not be suitable for 6-hour hikes in rough terrain, though. But they are supremely comfy and warm. I've worn them cycling in 30F temps with no thermals underneath and they've kept my legs warm. They're so comfortable that I'd consider wearing them just sitting around the house, except they're black and we have cats, so that wouldn't work.

Back from a dark 5 mi walk, I try and find deserted streets to pound my beat.

I walked the short local loop. Everything is covered in a sheet of ice because of 45degF temps yesterday, melting a lot of snow, and now it’s 18degF.

We do a lot of trails. Around the lake and up in the country. I can't wait for spring, this winter has been terrible to do any trails.

For answer to the main question, I use poles because it does reduce effort in a lot of the terrains I enjoy hiking and they are needed for my UL tent anyway.

Decided to go with La Sportiva Trango Tech GTX boots for an Alps trip later this year. Crampon compatibility was a factor in the decision. I have been putting walking miles on the boots to break them in and so far so good.
Decided on a Deuter Trail 30 pack, it is good quality and big enough for two all day hikes with an overnight in a cabin. |

I've just started getting into hiking, a fail that its taken so long living in such a beautiful country (New Zealand). I've been nicely surprised at the quality of the gear from aliexpress... I had planned to start with their gear then upgrade, but probably won't need to upgrade much (I do want a turbo boil though)
