rant, short

Not sure where else to put my complaint....haha

Bmw needs a middle tier.

With the advent of the new 2 series, and assuming it's a sign of the times, the power diffence between the 4cyl and 6cyl is insane. 130hp between the two engines is a 50% increase over the 4cyl.

Bmw needs a mid tier option else I fear that they're pricing themselves out of the more "reasonable" crowd.

Thoughts?

Doubt it will happen. It's the same thing with the competitors. More realistic option would be to bump the power on the 4 cylinder.

I'd rather see a smaller, lighter car. But we won't because they'd have to make it more expensive to be worthwhile, and they won't sell many when it's more expensive. We're done w/ NA engines as well, because of the fuel economy of that vs. a smaller, turbo engine.

50% more cylinders = 50% more power. Linear scaling. I don't see an issue

That 6 cylinder IS the mid-tier before you get into the M car. Introducing another tier would be a bad choice... you're not so much as bringing in new customers as you are risking cannibalization of the current mid-tier offering... which would end up raising questions as to its viability in the lineup... eventually leading to BMW cutting it... and now all of a sudden we have a less powerful mid-tier before jumping to the M car.

One of the things that attracted me to BMW was the tier model that they have. Three levels of engine to fit different people and needs. The base 4 is great for a nice drive. The 6 for a bump in power but not over aggressive. Then the M for the all out.

I found other brands to be too limited in their options. And additionally not giving a big enough jump at the next level.

Nice point! However their 6/4cly power ratio has been going up over the years. I think they should invest some more into 4cyl power.

Back in 2015 the 235 was making 320. Now it's "equivalent" is at 380's! Yikes! While, the equivalent 228i went from 240-255. 😭

It's true the 2.0T is quite conservative and overdue for a power bump. Even Toyota is squeezing more power from their 1.6T now.

How many tiers do you want Lmao. Everybody does one low-tier, one mid-tier, and one high performance engine.

you could always just tune the 4 cylinder with software and an exhaust. from what i remember a simple tune on the b48 will give you stock b58 level power.

You get what you pay for...

Is a simple rule! Doesn't matter, even if you build you're own, you aren't getting power for free! Mid-Tier? Drop a turbo on that 4 banger! Hahahaha

Otherwise, buckle up, spend some cash, and enjoy the ride!

Even Ford Mustang that used to be the "working man's" car, power that was cheap, isn't cheap any more. And forget about it if you want to hug trees and get an EV, sell a kidney and that'll get you in the door. You're still gonna need to pay to play!

I think we discovered, and some even agreed, that bmw has been putting more development into the 6cyl than the 4. I'm suuurreee they could squeeze some more power out of the 4 and make it more of a tuning platform, like they've been doing with the 6.

Yeah that's a good find! Thanks for that nugget. Proof than a 4cyl can make some more power!

They just need to put it in a car that's worth it. The 2GC isn't much to brag about. 😎

I sense BMW are pulling back on the range of ICE models. More so that what is achievable, and could be placed across all ranges.

Gone the days of something like a 1.8, 2.0, 2.3, 2.8, 3.5....

What am I missing? There *is* a middle tier.

230i : entry level (4 cylinders)
M240i : mid tier (6 cylinders)
M2 : top tier (6 cylinders)

Right, technically there are detuned versions of the b48 4 cyl in other non-North American markets as well. i.e. 220i
