I ate some metal today

You know those permanent retainers that orthodontists put behind your teeth after you get braces off? I've had mine on for the better part of 15 years. A few days ago on Friday, about 1 tooth's width worth of the retainer, came "un-glued". It was sticking out straight into my tongue any time I moved my mouth. Very painful, kinda sharp. Anyway, made an appointment with local dentist for Monday and bought some dental wax so it's not stabbing me.

This morning, less than 24 hours before the appointment to get it removed and replaced, I have breakfast. 20 minutes after breakfast, I realize that I don't feel anything where the sharp wire bit was. Upon inspection, it has disappeared! I swallowed it while I was eating.... So now I have a few mm of relatively pokey wire slowly making it's way through my digestive system. How fucked am I?

How was your guys' Sunday?

Most likely you will be fine. It will probably end up coming out on the other side. People swallow dental materials all the time, some much larger than what you described. I'd relax and not think about it too much.

You're exactly the same amount of fucked as before you swallowed it. It'll do no harm at all.

Fun fact; you can drink mercury if you want. It goes straight through and does absolutely nothing. However, if you accidentally inhale any of it, it's highly toxic!

Is there not a chance, if it's sharp and thin, that it could hook on to something.
Reads as though it safely got past the esophagus and upper tract.

My recommendation is to carefully check your stool over the next couple of episodes to make sure it passed.

Just kidding.

I was eating lunch when a tooth broke, it had a filling in it and I swallowed it. Do you think I'll set off the metal detector when I go through TSA next time?

Nope. I've got a couple of small titanium screws in my finger, and nothing happens at airports

You will be just fine. Did you know that you can jump off a 100ft high tower and I can guarantee you 100% that that jump wont kill you. The sudden stop at the bottom, now that's a different matter

The little piece of wire will likely go through your digestive tract like a piece of unchewed corn. Kind of decorative in the end.
