F1: Bahrain Best of the rest
So putting to one side Hamilton and Verstappen.
Who had a great race and who not so much? F1.com: Driver of the day was Perez. He definitely had a great drive from the back...20 secs behind the lead after the SC restart and having to fight past the pack with some 24 overtakes to 5th. With a decent start position he would easily have been up with leaders. Leclerc seemed to overperform the Ferrari package as usual. And Norris had a great race as well. I voted for Perez as well.. but F1's voting generally doesnt go well.. Max was 2nd according to voting.. he always gets in top 3 even he has an early crash.. Max fans just vote for each race blindly..

I dont think Perez counts as "the rest" anymore but he did have a good race. IMO, its between Leclerc and Norris. Norris seemed to have a pretty lonely day after escaping some early action and staying in clear air in front of the mid pack.
Leclerc had a great race and seemed to be constantly fighting with someone and still managed a 6th and almost a 5th. Very impressive. |

I was using "the rest" to mean not Hamilton or Verstappen.
There are some great drivers in F1 who shine despite not having the best machinery. Seemed like an idea to create a thread talk about them....rather than the endless BS threads about Verstappen vrs Hamilton. |

Speaking of... I will not be surprised at all if we see Stroll outperform Vettel over the whole of this season. |

I wanna give Vettel a few more races before giving up hope and saying he’s lost it. He’s making it super difficult though. He should’ve been able to demolish Stroll in qualifying. Look at how well the Hulk performed in the car last year without any practice.

Sergio, Charles and Lando definitely had good days all things considering. Sainz also had a pretty good day in hos Ferrari debut. I expect to see him move up more when he gets more comfortable with the car.
I was disappointed in Ric's first race with McLaren. I expected more and yuo barely heard his name. But, like Sainz, I expect to see him be a force when he to gets more comfortable with the car. I'm really excited to see how Sergio does when RB stops sabotaging their second driver. |

I really like Seb, he seems like a fun decent guy.
He has won a lot of races along with his 4 DWCs, made buckets of cash and a lovely family. But maybe its time for him to hang up his helmet...perhaps make a career as an F1 TV pundit?...as I don't think he will get another chance in a front line team. |

I think AM made a poor decision dumping Perez so quickly when they had the opportunity to sign SEB....time will tell.

though at least from the first race it seems that Honda didnt break some grounds powerwise.. Max wasnt able to overtake Lewis on the straights with DRS most of the time.. Merc's PU seems still more than ok.. and since they wont able to improve engines all season long this year.. Merc' can concentrate on next years aero without clouds..

I'd say RIC, NOR, PER, STR and TSU had great races. RIC had damage which affected his pace.
I'm looking forward to a great season!

It was a great race...almost makes you want a ballast penalty system so that every one has a chance at winning races. |

I like the system of giving the teams finishing in lower places a chance to use more resources. Ballast is too simple of a solution for a complex problem. Formula One is the highest level of sanctioned motorsport and ballast, IMHO, is antithetical to that ethos. Let everyone innovate but give the less successful team more time to research for solutions. I like this solution quite a lot!! Cheers-mk

Traditionally the idea of any form of performance equalisation is scorned as not being F1 and I do see that...yet the attraction of making F1 more show and less about who has the best technological package, does have its appeal. Who wouldn't want every driver to have a chance at winning. The trick is arriving at that point without upsetting everyone. Not sure that a spending cap/resource rationing will get the sport where it needs to be. |
