Just chalk it up to stupid things happen to stupid people. It's not worth trying to figure what happen we have no idea how long the person was at it. As someone pointed out the obvious why did the person simply get out when it caught fire, my first statement covers that answer.

In the condo building across from mine, a man in his 70's or 80's drove onto a golf course during a snow and got stuck and died of hyperthermia.

Prior to that for years I use to watch him park his car and walk away and then meander back to his car t make sure it was locked. Definite compulsion thing.

Problem is, a few years ago I parked my manual 235 and forgot to set the parking brake. Now I often park my car, take my stuff out of the trunk, walk away. and meander back to the drivers side window to make sure my parking brake is up.

Afraid what my future holds.

Happens quite frequency, which is how cars end up going through houses, off bridges, etc.

It would also explain why he didn't exit after the car caught fire.
This, the driver probably had a stroke or was on opiates.

I see that a the dragstrip. Some hotdog guy goes through the waterbox and does his burnout. Instead of holding the rpms at a constant speed to heat up his tires, he is on and off the throttle over and over and over again (I guess to attract attention). Those drivers are easy wins to get to the next round.
