I thought I read 'Mclaren's own engine...'

I could care less who makes it. Can't afford one, and would not make me think any less of Mclaren whether they outsource their engine or build in house.

The engine that is in all modern mclarens was designed by Ricardo. Who got the engine blueprint from Nissan and their VRH engine from the Nissan r390.

Nio EP9 – 6:45
Porsche 911 GT2 RS – 6:47

Lamborghini Huracan Performante – 6:52
Porsche 911 GT3 RS – 6:56
Porsche 918 Spyder – 6:57
Lamborghini Aventador SVJ – 6:59

Now....Wait till the 992 GT cars come out now that you see the 992 Turbo S stats just announced. There is no competition, for the 911 that is.
The P1 LM has 1000 hp and on custom pirelli Trofeos and can barely beat a GT2RS despite having nearly 50% more power and having a much stickier tire. Throw trofeos on the 2RS and I bet it beats the P1. The 991 chassis is now about 10 years old and given the 992S with 440 hp is faster than many much more powerful cars should be enough to show where this platform is headed. A 720S fun 7:14 at the Ring which is slower than a regular GT3 with only 493 hp and very little torque compatibly. Porsche simply does more with way, way, way less and IMO are more fun to drive and are far more dependable and reliable.

My guess is the new turbo S will run sub 6:50 and the 992 GT3 RS will run close to 6:40 on the Ring and will do so with only a bit above 500 hp. Not a single manufacturer could take a 520 hp car weighing the same as the 3RS and run anywhere close to its time.

Where to even begin with this. Jeez. Cup 2 R's on the GT2RS are far stickier than Teofeo R's. The GT2RS on regular Cup 2's isn't that impressive at all. The 720 S on Corsas has beaten it on several occasions.

How can you compare the time of the 720 s (7:08, corsa tires by Sport Auto), to a factory effort by Porsche on super sticky tires? It should be compared to the 6:58 on Cup 2R's (Sport Auto). Sport Auto will run the 720S on Trofeos shortly, so that gap should close considerably.

Just like you were singing the 991.2 Turbo S's praises until I proved to you that the M8 kicked its ass on several tracks.

Not a single manufacturer cares as much, or dedicates as much resources, to 'Ring times as Porsche.

Let's have a bet on that 6:50 time you're quoting for the 992 Turbo S.

I'm on a similar wave length. All of these McLaren cars look the same. Oh boy, another version of the same McLaren exotic car. Their entire lineup of models is the same platform and engine, just in different states of tune. That's like Porsche only selling the 911.

LOL! Nope...M8 got its ass handed to it by a 7 year old 991 turbo S which runs 1:50. Just go look at the times for Hockenheim. Or do you mean where the 991.2 GTS handed the M8 its ass there despite the fact that it only has 440 hp?

M8 in the real world is making well over 700 (based on the 660 WHP dyno) so it should be WAY faster than it actually is based on its power to weight.

On top of that the M8 competition ran a 7:29 on the Ring which is slower than a now generation old 991.2 Carrera S, LOL! The 991 turbo S is 12 seconds faster there btw.

No. I was referring to the Turbo S getting its ass handed to it by the M8 on the Sachsenring. There was a thread on the M8 forum which you, true to form, always jack, extolling the virtues of the 911. You posted fake times trying to defend the Turbo S, while waxing lyrical about how wonderful the Carrera S and GTS are.

And now you quote a factory time for the Turbo S at the Nurburgring. Did BMW set an official time on the 'ring for the M8? That a car that weighs 700 lbs less would be faster on a track that it has run on more than the M8. Who'da thunk it.

I think the same thing too and then I look at Porsche and besides wing size and a vent in the side, they all look pretty much the same, haha.

This new McLaren looks awesome to me. I just don't know if I am a McLaren guy (if I had to pick between a McLaren or similarly priced car)

If they made these a three seater like the McLaren F1, I think it would instantly be my favorite supercar. That cheesy thing to me is like cup holders to soccer moms.

Some more info

In 1997 Nissan, working in partnership with Tom Walkinshaw Racing, fielded an updated version of the engine called the VRH35L in the R390 GT1. This revised engine produces around 650 PS; 641 bhp (478 kW) at 6800 rpm.

The engine was also used in the 1998 Courage Compétition C51[2] Nissan at the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans. Both cars retired.

The design of the engine was later sold to McLaren Automotive where it formed the basis of their M838T family of engines.

McLaren bought the rights to the Tom Walkinshaw Racing developed engine, itself based on the Nissan VRH engine architecture,[2] which was designed for the IRL Indycar championship but never raced. However, other than the 93 mm (3.66 in) bore, little of that engine remains in the M838T.[3] In only 18 months, Ricardo went from a clean sheet of paper to a running prototype.

The McLaren M838T engine is a 3.8-litre (3,799 cc) 90 degree twin-turbocharged flat-plane V8, designed and developed in collaboration with Ricardo plc.
