Mookie / Price to LAD
Thoughts?
As a Sox fan, I’m ok with it. Not so much because I care about the salary cap situation, but I don’t expect the team to win this year, and I don’t expect them to spent $400M or whatever it takes to re-sign him next off season. Might as well get something back for him better than a compensatory pick and two young MLB-ready / near ready players sound good to me. I actually thought they should have traded him last year to maximize return, but they also got rid of Price’s contract, or at least a portion of it (not sure how much cash is going to LAD). Seems like a no-brainer for LAD. If Betts help them finally win a WS and then walks, no big deal. They have the depth to backfill or $$$ to spend. Taking on Price (net of any cash from Sox) is just the cost of doing business. I think this is a Win-Win for both teams.

I don’t understand how Boston could let Mookie go. I get the whole luxury tax. However, you have one of the best all around players in the game. You signed Evoldi, and Sale, to long term contracts, that I think are bad. Boston, your a big market team. You do whatever it takes to keep players like Mookie. However, if he wants $400m then bye, bye. Now, as a YANKEE fan, I’m glad to see him go. Maybe we see him in October.

https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/red...contract-talks Who knows what’s true. Maybe they could have found a middle ground. But they have been trying to sign him for a few years without finding it and 12/420 seems outrageous to me. He’s a great player but 10-12 years is a very long time. He has said he liked Boston but wanted to go to free agency. I suppose they could try to get him back if LAD don’t lock him up long term before the end of the season, but that seems extremely unlikely.

Sox have done well for a good stretch. Time to retool and start over. The NYY are going to be the ALE winners by a long shot this season. If they don't walk away with it, something is very wrong there.
The LAD will still find a way to eff it all up. I'm thinking NYY will be WS champs this year. And this is from a lifelong Sox fan who runs a Sox discussion forum.
