If it helps at all, up here it cost $300 for the plate, but was refundable if you didn't get it. Non-refundable, that's crap.

That's for the application fee. Seems like there was an actual charge for the plate itself once a person has the states approval. I called our local registration office and spoke with them about it. Even the lady on the phone was skeptical about the whole thing. That was the only reason I didn't pull the trigger then.
