How much does a top F1 team spend developing and building a car? How about IndyCar? Taking that into account maybe the difference is not that bad? I prefer F1 myself.

From a Jalopnik article: "The two series have huge budget differences, with NBC Sports reporting in 2013 that the Ferrari F1 team’s estimated annual budget was $470 million compared to a top team budget of $15 million in IndyCar. The top expenditure on race cars in F1 that year was $125 million, compared to $3 million in IndyCar. And, of course, that was six years ago."

But the sad truth is that Americans don't care about F1. 9 out of 10 people on the street don't even know it exists. If I mention it at a party, people typically assume I'm talking about NASCAR.
I don't understand it; Americans watch World Cup soccer, but not this. Maybe if Haas was sponsored by Goody's Headache Powder... |

I wish it was easier to see V8 Supercars, DTM, etc. The road racing is actually interesting. |

That's a fair point. As much as I find NASCAR to be as enjoyable as sitting in a terminal traffic jam, the way they mix-it-up with one another keeps the fan interest going.

I purposely record all F1 races and start watching at least 30-45 min after the start. Solves a lot of my problems with the series. Prerace can be fast forwarded through commercials and interviews I don't care about and if I am not interested in watching the whole race I can FF through sections I don't care about. Full course yellows are often another 5 minutes of wasted time as they work on getting the car removed and the course cleaned up. They can't do anything about it but I don't need to watch the parade laps.

I've been an F1 fan since treaded tires and Mike Hawthorn's bow tie, and as this thread suggests the performance differential between Indy cars and F1 is undeniable. This is borne out by the first two lines in the attached chart, as one would expect with a COST differential of at least 60:1. I submit that the third and fourth lines of the chart raise quite a different argument, maybe a more important one.

Americans tend to like a hero story. F1 seems to be driven by computerized drivers. So in the end, if you can't relate to who is doing the actual driving, it's difficult to get into - like watching a computer game (at least from the Americans standpoint). Europeans like F1 for almost the opposite reason because they see F1 as the ultimate expression of automotive technology that Europeans have to offer to the world regardless of the drivers.
It's hard for me to see an American team can compete with say Ferrari or Mercedes at least not in ten years. Haas has to rely on Ferrari components. The chassis is built by Italian Dallara. I am not sure Haas knows how to build an F1 engine even if they try. On the other hands, most F1 teams can pretty much build an IndyCar and be competitive on first race. |

Actually they can't. The common monocoque chassis, the suspension, and the aerokit must be purchased from Dallara's Speedway, Indiana shop, where Dallara produces and assembles the IndyCar.

Mario Andretti is the only 1 I can think of and that was over 40 years ago. His son failed miserably on his attempt which shows that F1 is from a drivers pov quite a step up from indy cars (the other way around seems to be more chance of succes: F1 drivers that retire/switch to indycar). But on the subject of hero storys vs computerized drivers: who do you think these guys are cheering for?

I guess everyone is entitled to his own opinions but one of the first drivers who brought up the point was Ayrton Senna, not me. |
