Canon 17-55 f2.8?

I know the old adage that if you have to ask, buy the cheapest glass you can, but...I disagree

I have a Canon 60D body with the kit lens (18-55 )and the nifty 50 and the 75-300. The 50mm is fantastic, but its not exactly ideal for what we typically use the camera for. That would be taking pictures of the kids around the house, on vacation, at parties, etc. The typical use for a family of 4 with two young boys.

My wife recently asked about getting a new lens. She likes the 50mm results, but wants the utility of the kit lens. I came across a 17-55mm f2.8 locally (used) for about $425. I've heard great things about the lens and it seems to check the boxes of better utility and better quality for a reasonable price.

Any other solid options to consider? I had a tamron lens years ago that was nice (sold it with my 35mm SLR years back) so I'm not opposed to non-Canon glass.

fyi, the fred miranda forums has an excellent used buy and sell section where I've bought 99.999% of my lenses. Plus the community there is great. Don't focus on canon only lenses as sigma makes great glass too.
