I had a white noise app on my phone that was really useful for studying or doing projects in college. I'd put the headphones in, volume on low, and crank out the work that needed to be done.

It seemed to help me focus as long as it wasn't something too distracting. For some reason I find the mechanical sounds more soothing such as a fan, jet plane, lawn mower, tire noise from a car, a diesel truck idling, etc.

I'm also used to working in IT data centers where there are lots of computers and fans running, so lots of background noise.
