All Apple Watches have cheaply made heart monitor plastic
Whether your Apple watch cost $250 or $10,000 it appears to have the same cheap plastic heart rate monitor that scratches easily when used with the charging cable. I only have the cheap one and assume the high end ones are made of ceramic or gold and different materials like sapphire for the lens. IT would appear that Ion-X glass is durable enough but not the plastic back, seems like an oversight or attempt to cut costs when margins are already plentiful. Had mine replaced outside of warranty for free due to faulty battery and tried to avoid scratching the back but there's a slight scratch on one of the sensors. Doesn't affect functionality but still looks bad. What is your experience with trying to avoid scratching the back?

Wrong. The newer cellular versions have a ceramic back, so they aren’t all composite.
The small bit of glass would be negligible in terms of cost. Apple doesn’t skimp on materials. It’s likely plastic because of a functionality constraint where glass would compromise accuracy. It also could be a safety concern since you are wearing the watch. |

I've had my watch almost 3 yrs now and had no scratches on the back side of the watch and I charge it every night. So I'm not sure what the durability is or what people are doing to scratch the back of the watch. Maybe the hair on the arm is so course it scratches the back.
I have the stainless watch since it has the sapphire crystal, and I only have watched with sapphire because I destroy more watch crystal over the years. |

If you to cheap out and buy the shitty aluminum model, then yes, it will scratch. The stainless steel and ceramic models rarely show scratches.
