Wall Street Journal: The End of Car Ownership

Oh S#*T. . . say it ain't so!

"Owning a BMW or other luxury brand in the future might be a luxury akin to owning a horse"

I've only owned my X5 for just over 3 months. I'm 68 and owned many cars. I have to say I've always wanted one and now that I actually own one . . . its a "thrill and an honor" to drive it every-time I get behind the wheel

Now the electrics and the Ubers are trying to take them away from us.
yes, yes I know BMW makes an electric . . . but to me, driving an electric is like kissing your sister

Ya think Tesla paid enough to sponsor and get this type of article published?

Its all a central planners wet dream......

Outside of the most dense urban areas their little fantasies are impractical and not cost effective.....in other words nothing will change

I strongly agree. Currently our cars (we have 3, 2 daily drivers and a weekend car car) are used about an hour a day and sit for 23 hours (daily drivers) . Uber gets rid of the driver, ride becomes half the current cost, far more use them, far more cars available and likely we would get rid of one car immediately. Wife is then dropped off at the front door downtown, calls an Uber on the way out of the building, saves money, saves time, saves hassle. Depreciation, maintenance, insurance, repair all turns into a cost for a ride.
Cabs and Uber don't currently work because of the expensive driver sitting in the car, one of highest costs of the ride.

Funny when I hear the people on these forums talk about their car being taken away, manufacturers will provide what the market wants.

If my car can operate at night, during the day when I don't need it, or on the weekend without me in it I would be happy to share my car (likely for some $$) with friends and family right now.

Fuck cabs. Taxi, cab, uber, lyft, whatever man, they're all the damn same. Thanks, I'd rather not sit in the uncleaned slime of the 10,000 people before me. It's like a nastier version of sloppy seconds. I'll ride a bike first.

As long as it doesn't become illegal to drive an manually operated car on the open roads, I like both options. TBH rather people be driven by autonomous cars in morning and afternoon commute so less likelihood for accidents. Pleasure driving will become more of a luxury market for those willing to pay.

Let the masses be driven I say.

The article forgot one important point: in order to support the demand for those that don't own cars, others must own cars. So car ownerships are not going away, ever.

What it will do is drive up the price

Fewer units = higher prices

^^This might be true in the future.

I always find these articles amusing though. They discuss cars going away completely but then forget about those who live miles away from anything. Their solution is always "well, those people will move to the city and enjoy public transportation". Yup, because that works SO well now.

CT implemented the FastTrak bus system in Hartford. The stops were not well planned, and not enough people ride the buses to make them worthwhile. All they did was add buses to the already backed up streets. One of my co-workers actually took the bus for a few weeks to save gas money, and found it took her much longer to get to and from work.

I'm sure with technology advancements public transportation and hybrid vehicles will start to have a much larger presence, but cars going away completely? Not a chance.

This is part of it, to be honest. I'm 26. I had my learner's permit at 15, license and bought my own car by 16. I had friends in college that at 24 still didn't have a license or even a permit. They just had no desire to drive. If they had jobs they walked or had people (mainly parents) drive them. This was fascinating to me because I couldn't imagine not having a license past high school. I had to commute to college as well as work. I guess most my age are more concerned with social media and smart phones.

The real reason why they don't want to drive is because those millennials can't take their eyes off those damn phones!

You would have to pry my Bimmer from my cold dead hands. This is a snowflakes wet dream. Driving is just way too distracting, when you need to invest all your waking hours to getting triggered.

The ultimate direction for crappy electric self driving cars will be drive sharing, so you don't have to own the vehicle .
I got away from the bus and I'm not going to wait for my electric car pool/smell fest to save the planet!
It's one of those cerebral excessive that big cities come up with...

Have you ever sat in a public movie theater? How about a sporting event with public seating?

Or, do you live in a hermetically sealed chamber and only emerge to drive your car?
