Canon 5D MkIV Announced Along With Two Lens Updtaes

The 5D MkIV gets some major improvements, aimed at the video market and some nice, incremental upgrades of the still photographers:

http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/ca...=&CID=1-S7G3ZG

I'm most excited about the update of the 24-105/f4 lens. The Series I version of this has been a workhorse in my kit since 2008. I looking forward to the optics upgrades, but really excited about a full 4-stops of IS. I hand hold at night a lot, and this'll be huge for me. See the release:

http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/ca...=&CID=1-S7G3ZG

My ultra-wide is the incredible EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM, but if I didn't have that, I'd be thinking very hard about the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III. This should be a stunning lens, covering the ultra-wide to wide zoom range. Not cheap, but it's very hard to make ultra-wide zooms with high IQ, but Canon has figured it out:

Here in Norway the 16-35 2.8L III jumped up 65% in price compared to the 16-35 2.8L II.

Yes, I feel your pain, but a used S-II may be a super bargain.

I've got the 16-35 f/4L IS, so I'm good. My only L lens I bought new in Norway, got it on sale with 20% off. Costed me 8000 NOK, so less than a third of the new 16-35 III that's over 26000 NOK.

I'm an amateur at best and really should take a class on photography at some point, this camera is completely above my abilities. I bet the 5D Mark III will serve me well for quite some time.

In regards to the 24-105mm, I enjoy mine also. Since it's a kit lens, this one should be pretty affordable at some point.

The 24-105mm is an L-series that Canon sells in "kit" format, but it'll never be "affordable." A year or two down the road, lightly used ones will be $800. Not sure, but I'm guess that my 8 year old Series I will command around $350. That's finally nearing "affordable", but still way more than most casual users want to pay.

I bought my 24-105mm out of a 5D Mark II kit and it had never been used. I probably paid $800 for it back then, but that's been a few years. Looking at how the market's been flooded by them in the past few years, you can pick them up for around the $600 mark now.

That being said, I've taken so many great photos with it that I don't really care if they've drop in price somewhat. It was great on my crop body but really started to shine on my full frame.

My 24-105 was a refurb and ran me about $900 about 5 years ago. Easily my most used lens. The new 24-105 is really going to have to wow me to get me to jump. But considering the asking price, it's not bad when compared to what I paid 5 years ago.

So much controversy surrounding this camera with so many people (just skimming through FB posts) bitching about not enough this, not enough that, the price, etc etc

One thing that sort of burns me is this new wifi card they came out with for the 7D MkII and other bodies. It's cheap enough, but why didn't they just include wifi to begin with? They certainly had the technology and it's not like it would have increased the cost unreasonably. It's almost like they just forgot to design it in.

It's to be expected. Every single time something new comes out, there are more complainers than folks who appreciate it. I think everyone forgets that we've always taken amazing photos, even all the way back to the mid 1800s. You don't need a Mark IV to make great photos. You just need a good eye, some imagination and a camera.

I may have my 8-year old 24-105mm sold for $400. If so, then I'll pre-order the series II. The extra 2-stops of IS is a HUGE deal to me. I do a lot of hand held, night, street shooting and can use every stop. Plus, based on the recent zooms from Canon, I'll be that the S-II takes a big step forward in IQ.
