Gordie Howe - Dead at 88

Just saw this news. So sad.

As a hockey lover - so very very sad.

As a former Detroit - more personal.

You can read the local announcement here.

Quote:
Howe played more than 1,700 games in the NHL and scored more than 800 goals. He is widely known simply as "Mr. Hockey."

In Detroit, he is a legend. He won the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings four times, won six Hart Trophies as the league's most valuable player, and won six Art Ross Trophies as the leading scorer during his time with Detroit between 1946 and 1971.

He still holds numerous team records. Howe is so beloved in Detroit, across Michigan and in his home country of Canada that a new bridge to be built between Detroit and Windsor has been named in his honor: Gordie Howe International Bridge.

This is then the 3rd to die, and other sports celebrities can breath again?

RIP Gordie!

This is definitely a tough one being a huge hockey fan. He coined the Gordie Howe hat trick -- a goal, an assist, and a fight. He was one of kind and you won't see this type of player for a long time. Messier played like him and those guys don't come a long too often. RIP Mr. Hockey.

First time I saw him play was in the WHA with Marty and Mark for the Houston Aeros. Even at that age, you could see why he gets mentioned as one of the best 3 or 4 to ever play the game.

RIP indeed!

When you think of the grandfather of hockey his name comes to mind. What a career and with the Gordie Howe hat trick his remembrance will always be there.

Great words from Gretzky who idolized him. He still says he's the greatest ever.

Look up 'legend' and it should say Gordie Howe.
As much for the person he was as what he did for hockey.
