CCTV Playback clarity

Does anyone know whey are CCTV playback so much less quality than when i'm watching live?
is this normal for CCTV systems?
the one we have at work now is Hikvision

Live CCTV is a direct feed while recorded it will have degradation due to compression. Perhaps you could fiddle with the recording settings for bitrate, etc.

Hikvision cameras have multiple streams. You could be viewing the HD stream but recording a low resolution stream.
