1886 Waltham Pocket watch

Wanted to share a item from my grandparents, that was recently found after cleaning out their house.

A Waltham hunter case pocket watch, 18-size, Model 1883, P.S. Bartlett grade, hunting movement. Made around 1886-1887, where about 96,000 were made. Waltham watch Co, was one of the first companies to mass produce movements on an assembly line. I just started doing some research on the watch. I used the SN to get some basic info on the watch and been browsing a watch collector forum/site so far.

Im still learning and researching it and saw E90 post had a watch section, so wanted to share my finding and see if anyone knows any info on these old watches.

That's a beautiful watch. I don't know much at all about pocket watches. I'd love to see more scoop as you discover it. I know Waltham made nice watches, but that's about it.

There is a company around -- name starts with a "P" -- that refurbs and used Waltham movements in their current watches. (If you feel like you need the name, PM me and I'll dig it up.) If your watch guy can't find authentic parts you might need for repairs, you may want to reach out to them to see if they can give you a good lead. Ditto RGM in Pittsburgh. I'm almost certain some of their watches use refurbished Waltham parts.

Even if they don't have the specific bits you may need, they could likely give you some inside dope on places to try should you need to source such things at some point.

That's beautiful! Looks to be in excellent shape and I love the engraving details on the case. Definitely find an expert on pocket watches and have it properly appraised...

It does have your watch listed in its catalogue. You should check as it shows only 1000 units of your model being made, so its quite rare and a great find. I have a 1908 model for the past 30 years that still keeps good time. About 2000 were made from what the model run shows. Its a great part of the collection, enjoy.
