asking for a friend who's interested in X1. Is it a target for carjackers in Chicago?
was chatting with a friend about the X1 that I had on order for a couple of months.
she lives in Chicago... while her home is in a "good suburb, she does need to commute to/from downtown Chicago daily. She works at an upscale fancy hotel and parks in the hotel's own garage. However, she does sometimes leave as late as 7pm or 9pm. Does a basic BMW X1 seem like a safe vehicle for the downtown area? Or can it be a target for carjackers in Chicago.. or in any other major city for that matter....? She current drives a leased Volvo XC60 and she says no self-respecting carjacker ever wants a Volvo.(which I kind of doubt) She had a neighbor whose Mercedes GLA(the cheapest Mercedes SUV) that was carjacked... the carjacker smashed the driver's side window, opened the door and tried to get the neighbor to get out... but fortunately the carjacker ran away when they saw a police car in the distance) Thanks1 |

Carjackers target specific cars? I highly doubt this; carjacking is a crime of opportunity, not a car theft ring. Your friend should just stay in the suburbs if she's that afraid of the city.

cars are cheap... human life isn't..... she's not really worried about the cost of the car being taken away. It's leased anyway, so worse case scenario, she's only out a few hundred dollars for insurance deductible.
the last 3 that she heard about, all victims were shot in the back(fortunately, only severely injured, not killed) even after they willing exited the vehicles to the armed carjackers at the red light and tried to walk away. Two were Mercedes one was Infiniti. |
