Any guitarists or ex-guitarsts out there?
I'll start:
I've played guitar for over 50 years. In the '60s I was in a garage band and we were pretty crappy quite frankly. More ego than talent. I hated the band dynamics and quit that scene. I couldn't sing very well and I wasn't a good enough guitarist to hold my own without singing (few are). So, I sold my electric gear and bought a used Martin acoustic and just played for my own enjoyment. I've had many guitars over the years but that old Martin is the one I've kept. I still cannot sing, but I do get it out from time to time and just play old favorites or learn a new song that catches my ear. It got me thinking. How many of you in this crazy crowd currently play or played guitar? Were/are you in a band? Do you still play? What's your favorite guitar? |

I used to play many, many, many moons ago but very basic stuff. I used to be a rythm guitarist for band I had with my cousins. We played Bachata. Self taught but again very basic compared to what I'm sure most of you guys can play. I STILL wanna learn how to play rhythm and blues along other things. I have books that I've opened like 4 times to teach myself but I get lazy. It's harder when you're older with more responsibility and less time lol! Haven't touched my guitar in about 3 years...

I started really early (primary school) but unfortunately never put in the effort to be really good. I remember being amazed at one of my high school's school gathering there was this student who was playing something amazing on the classical guitar, he was well-known at school as being very proficient and a guitar-lover, man, I should've asked him to take me under his wing, maybe my path would've been different.
I really admire some ppl I met in university, they were actually studying for a music degree. To live in the arts as a living, that is impressive. Flirted w the idea of starting a band but my friends (and I) were pretty lame and just couldn't get started. It was during the 80s New Wave period so the guitar took a backseat anyway. I'm actually playing much more recently; I only play along to some videos/music or by myself though. I like singing and playing the guitar, even though I'm not really that good, it's fun to discover a song and find out the chords and play it, it's some minor level of achievement/satisfaction.

Started playing over 50-years ago but always felt I enjoyed watching good guitarist over trying to be one. Lost my favorite acoustic Gibson acoustic "student" model over 40-years ago when someone else played it and returned it to a shelf precariously from where it fell and shattered. Still have a couple and pick them up occasionally just to reassure myself that it takes more natural talent than practice time. I have neither.
My favorite (to look at) is this D'Aquisto Jazz Line. |

Add me to the short list. I started playing my last year in high school (1988) and have been playing off and on since. I don't think music ever leaves those it truly touches. I taught guitar for several years for extra money here and there.
Quick couple of pix from 1992 when I was pretty into it. Q: Were/are you in a band? A: Yes, I was in a few bands, one heavy and one acoustic. Q: Do you still play? A: Weekly, if not daily. Q: What's your favorite guitar? A: Ibanez JS model, but I've always wanted an original Floral Pattern JEM. Last edited by ///MPhatic; 09-12-2022 at 07:06 AM.. |

Glad to see you are still playing. For me, it's not often enough. I'm down to 2 guitars now and they deserve to be played: 1951 Martin 000-18 I bought in 1965 1994 Taylor 712ce that I bought new I think I'll find some time today to open the case. |

I wish I'd kept an electric. My son has a Fender Strat so I dabble from time to time, but when I got out of a band I went acoustic and never went back. Way before your time, but in '66, Buffalo Springfield was playing at a local dance club. I stood up front looking up at Stephen Stills playing not 5 feet away. At that time, he was using a flat pick AND two finger picks (middle and ring finger). The next day, I bought finger picks and started learning folk and folk rock songs. Those were the days! |

Btw, what are you guys' fave guitars? I'm just going by looks. I'm not up-to-date on the latest but I recall being smitten by the PRSs, esp w the bird inlays: Cool story about said inlays:

I have a black JS1 with Joe's signature. I needed the smaller neck as well, much smaller than the Wizard neck on all of their R series guitars. I sold an old Wilson student classical many years ago that I wish I had back. |

Ya, there were a couple I sold that I should've kept for sentimental reasons but I'm an idiot, and there was this acoustic w the PERFECT thin neck for me (in hindsight) that I sold as well - it was so effortless playing that.

I've played at home as a perpetual intermediate / hobbiest / only for myself for almost 20 years. I have bought and sold and modified a few dozen electrics, but realized over the last few years / as I got older that I really love the acoustic.
I still have 3 electrics - one of which is a Tele I assembled and finished myself, 2 Epiphones (SG, LP Special) and 5 acoustics: 2 Taylors (114 / 314ec), 2 Yamahas (FSX5, FG5) and a Martin 15 OM My favorite is easily the Yamaha FSX5

Yup.
Played in a band with some friends but we never did shows, except for one. Mostly for fun. Don't play as much as I'd like to nowadays. I've always been a fan of American made Jackson guitars but over the years I realize that for value/sound/feel, Ibanez has climbed that ladder to the top. I sold most of my gear and now my "daily" driver is an RG550. |

I'm curious, do you like your FSX5 for its action and playability or is it the sound? |

My only experience with guitars is hanging on the wall in my office... zero talent but a huge lover of all kinds of music.

I played in high school and was in a few bands (played covers only). We were ok and made a little money at it.
Basically put the guitar away before graduating high school, but always picked it up on occasion and kept the little skill I had. Recently got back into it, bought some guitars and amps and like to make loud noise at home and the once in a while session with friends. Favorite guitar is hard to name. I like the different sounds you get from various guitars. I have a Rickenbacker and a Les Paul and a few in between the Ric chime and mud of a Les Paul.

Good news is if it falls off the wall there's not that much loss! Actually, it's pretty amazing how little a decent-playing guitar costs. Great starter. What's the story on the artwork on the guitar? I'm a bit old so if it's obvious and just over my head, it won't be the first time. |
