For me:
Dad was Golden Gloves - Chicago; taught us to box on canvas bag without tape at age 5, similar to Rmtt
Earned a 2nd Dan in TaeKwonDo taught to us by GM Yung Chul Ra, I was age 40
Shifted to more 'self-defense' and earned 1st Dan in Combat Hapkido
Hold several NRA certs to teach firearms including concealed
Teach mostly now and enjoy helping folks feel confident with whatever 'tools' they choose.
