It is far too early to discuss the drivetrain for the next generation of M2. However I would take a likely guess is that because current M2 is perfect enough with RWD as it does what it expects to do.
What would AWD bring other than more weight and enhanced grip?
I think hypothetically that they will not include the M2 with xDrive but I believe it is possible again hypothetically the M3/M4 will feature M xDrive.
The M5 does well with its switchable M xDrive again it's an AWD system developed completely on BMW M's terms. Imagine what it could do for the M3/M4?
