Indycar refueling is by a raised tank emptying into a 5" diameter hose...the 22 gallon tank can be filled in less than 10 seconds. Fast is a factor, but that was only part of what Formula 1 refueling was about. F1 was about fuel load and the different strategies that could be employed. Starting with little fuel, a car could create a big enough lead that could be tough to overcome. Then also, on tracks where passing is more difficult light load starts by weaker cars was the norm. Having the wrong fuel load when a safety car deployed could ruin one teams plans while catapulting a team that chose the correct amount. Refueling strategies added another dimension to the race...exciting and tough for the teams to predict or counter.
