Yes OTA removes the need to involve the dealer with updates. To me in car if something works just leave it alone. With a smart phone probably the level of tolerance with screw ups due to botched updates is more tolerable than on a car where it can cripple functions and open up the door to would be hackers. And hackers are the proverbial white elephant across the room that no one talks about..
If you can't do over the air update you can't patch security either, no?

I mean in these day and age can't expect 100% off line (the more hacking proof way).

Right now iDrive6 only allow over the air update on map but doesn't stop someone figure out some unwanted code path to end up touching something else either
