I could build a really fast Fox-body Mustang for less than $20k........but I'd also be driving a car designed in the early-80s, off a platform designed in the 70s that wouldn't have any modern conveniences.

Yeah, if you want a real good race car, you need to build one. It’ll cost money, but not as much as a gt3 RS, but you’ll strip everything non essential out, cut the body panels, do all sorts of mods. It’ll spank an production car around a track, except for hyper-car level stuff, but it’s not a good example of anything other than a race car.
