Maybe. There are a lot of variables as to whether or not one is required, mainly your relationship with the dealer (first-time buyer vs. return customer) and the car you are ordering. The more unique the car, the more likely one will be required. If it is something they'll be able to sell easily should you back out (say a M4 black/black with exec and zcp) then they might not require a deposit, vs. an individual or less popular color combo/options package. Also the state your in can come into play, I know here in CA it is difficult if not damn near impossible to keep a customers deposit, so why bother.
If they require a deposit, it'll likely depend on the model, but figure $1k up to $5k possibly (way too much variation to make anything but a guess).
