The bulk of our property tax goes to the town/village/city, and they are responsible for collecting it. Sales tax goes to the county, along with a small share of the property tax (about 21% on my latest bill). Income tax goes to the state. School tax (out of control) goes to the local district.
Our property taxes are only on real property, which they define as land and buildings. No crazy annual "personal" property taxes on cars and stuff, like some other states do.....
