I get what you are saying but I think it's almost the opposite in the case of the R8
because the v10 is so epic and dominates the experience, the manual itself is not as important as it would be a more mundane car (also I wasn't a huge fan of the gated transmission in the 3 I drove as compared to say a porsche manual)
on the other hand with a more pedestrian vehicle, a manual transmission is more important to give you an engaging experience.
