I understand what you're saying and it does suck to have to deal with an unforeseen repair bill when there are mods to be done. If you do choose to go to an outside vendor for the glass. I would suggest that you tell them that BMW states that you have to replace the plastics when replacing the windshield. If they say that they will be doing just that, then you're good to go. If they say that it is not necessary, then that could be an issue. Let them know they need to replace the plastics and get it in writing before the job is done of exactly what they are replacing. Of course the outside vendor is more cost effective for you. Just be sure the job will be done right and that means getting all the facts in writing before the job is done. This way you're covered.
